ABSTRACT

With the advent of the industrial revolution, studies show that the level of sleep quality, mood and regular practice of physical activities are affected by the high demand that individuals are subject to to meet their needs. The study aimed to analyze the levels of sleep quality, physical activity and mood states of traders of the Paraíba company of supply and agricultural services. One hundred merchants from Empasa in Campina Grande voluntarily participated in the study. To analyze the level of physical activity of traders, the short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used, to measure mood states, the Brunel scale (BRUMS) and the Pittsburgh questionnaire were used to assess sleep quality. It was observed that most traders evaluated (55%) have low levels of physical activity. In addition, in relation to sleep quality, 69% of traders had poor sleep levels and 18% had a sleep disorder. It was found that traders presented the iceberg profile that represents good mental health. However, there are changes in the emotional profile mainly in relation to the level of perception of tension and fatigue. It is concluded that traders had low levels of physical activity and poor sleep quality. In addition, they present an iceberg profile that represents good mental health, but they present an increase in the perception of tension and fatigue.

ABSTRACT

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a one of occurrence with multiple possible neuropsychiatric symptoms, including problems with cognition, emotion, and behavior and deficits in social skills (Hartley 1995). Traumatic brain injury refers to a physiologically significant disruption of brain function resulting from the application of external physical force, including acceleration/deceleration forces (Marr et. al 2002). Severity level of traumatic brain injury can be classified as mild, moderate, and severe. In this context we wanted to study the cognitive functions, social deficits, and state of mood in an individual aftereffect of TBI frequent problems of cognitive, emotional, behavioral, physical, and psychosocial were reported in various studies and substantial source of at least temporary disability and stress to TBI survivors and their families. Hence, we have planned psychological and cognitive management for them. Therefore, in present study, a male of 26 years resident of Jaipur city was studied, the neuropsychological and behavioral functioning was assessed, and findings suggest that impairment in attention and concentration, visual motor functioning, and visuo- spatial functioning, anger, confusion-bewilderment and fatigue state and poor social relationship. Post psychological intervention improvement was observed

ABSTRACT

Abstract Music, from its several possibilities, induces emotional responses, which are reflected in the physiological and cognitive changes of the listeners, this is a thematic of study in common among different disciplines: music psychology, music therapy, music anthropology, neuropsychology, among others. At the neuroanatomical level, neuroimaging studies have shown that music can modulate the activity of limbic and paralimbic structures, that is, structures that are especially involved in the initiation, generation, maintenance, completion and modulation of emotions. Being able to understand how music can affect the mood of people allow us to contribute to the creation of new techniques oriented to emotional regulation through music. The current study was develop with the aim of evaluating the effect of perception of a musical piece, with activating characteristics (experimental group) vs. white noise (control group), as mood modulator, from a neurosientific perspective. Participated 29 young adults (55 % man), between 18 to 40 years old (. = 22.07, SD = .43), with no presence of neurological diseases or amusia, nor consumption of medications at the time of the study. The selection of the musical piece with activating characteristics was evaluated in a preliminary study, which counted with the participation of 24 young adults, who valued three pieces of music in terms of valence (emotion that the piece generated) and arousal (activation level). The 3 pieces were: "Tika Tika Walk" by Carlos D'alessio; "Leafmen" by Danny Elfman and "Define Dancing" by Thomas Newman. From this preliminary study, the activating stimulus that would be used for emotional modulation was selected ("Leafmen" by Danny Elfman). The emotional induction of the participants was carried out through the observation of 24 images with negative emotional valence (extracted from International Affective Picture System). About procedure, the study consisted of a single session of activity, divided into the following five phases: (1) information phase: participants signed the informed consent and completed the socio demographic questionnaire, (2) emotional induction phase: participants observed 24 negative images, and they had to rate each image from 0 to 10 (not arousing/emotional at all to highly arousing/emotional), (3) pre- measurement phase: participants completed a scale of mood, instrument used to measure transient moods, (4) perception phase: under a random distribution, a group of volunteers listened the activating music piece and another group listened the white noise (both for 3 minutes), and finally (5) post-measurement phase: participants completed a scale of mood after music or white noise perception. We analyzed the assumptions of normality and homogeneity of the sample using the statistics of Levenne and Shapiro Wilk. The results analyzed through non-parametric tests (Wilcoxon test, with a . value of .05). In the pre- measurement of mood, no significant differences were found between groups. Results of post- measurement phase indicated that music with activating characteristics, modulated the emotions of sadness and anxiety, decreasing them significantly. The results obtained indicate that music, specifically selected, aided as a modulator of emotions. It is important not to generalize the results obtained to the whole population, in this sense and thinking in future research, it would be necessary to expand the sample to a larger ., as well as to investigate this effect in other samples. The results obtained allow to open new paths in terms of the intrinsic qualities of music and its elements to promote relief of anxiety and stress, regulate moods and, promote motivation or enable the development of mechanisms to adapt to situations new and/or traumatic. Finally, it could be assumed that music constitutes an effective stimulus to modulate emotional responses, which are reflected in the mood changes of the listeners.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The assessment of mood state can be used as a tool for monitoring the training adaptation. However, to athletes with a physical disability, this tool is still a few explored, especially in training daily conditions. The aim of the study was to analyze the mood state during training sessions in wheelchair basketball athletes. Twelve male athletes, aged between 23 and 62 years old, were evaluated. The subjects answered the POMS questionnaire before and after five training sessions during the preparatory period. Shapiro Wilk test for normality and Friedman were used for comparison amongst sessions, adopting p<0.05. It was found that the athletes presented a positive mood profile (iceberg) during the analyzed period. A negative mood reduction and positive mood maintenance were observed after all training sessions. Therefore, the results indicate that the training sessions can decrease the negative mood dimension, especially the depression and anger in wheelchair basketball athletes.

ABSTRACT

Considering physical activity as an important component for the physical and mental health of individuals, the present study aimed to investigate psychosocial factors of workers' daily life in order to understand the relation between these variables and active behavior. This is a quantitative study, carried out in a public university located in the interior of the State of São Paulo. Were participants in this study, 395 non-teaching staff from all campus units. Data collection was done through the application of the socioeconomic questionnaire, Baecke physical activity questionnaire, social support scale for physical activity, the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS) and the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT). To analyze the data, statistical tests were carried out using SPSS software version 20 and the support network structure was analyzed in Gephi 0.9.1 software. According to the results, social support, positive mood (vigour), and alcohol consumption were predictors of habitual physical activity. It should be noted that a positive relation was found between habitual physical activity and alcohol consumption, especially among low-risk drinkers, and that social support had a moderating effect on this relation. In addition, some subgroups were identified to be prioritized in actions and proposals to sensitize active behavior, namely: women, those who had some chronic health condition, individuals with more extended family compositions, and workers of administrative sectors. It is also pointed out that a significant portion of the participants, mainly men and those with less schooling, presented characteristics of harmful alcohol consumption. Therefore, some recommendations were drawn for the incorporation of more horizontal actions intended to improve these aspects. In summary, the findings of the present study reinforce the idea that elements in different levels of influence can act directly or indirectly in the engagement of individuals in the phenomenon of physical activity, and that the complexity involved in active behavior requires, on the part of health professionals, a broader approach to the development of feasible strategies to the reality of this group

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Leisure time is fundamental for personal life in human being, inferring a preponderant role in indicators such as health. ABSTRACT

The disordered eating (DE) concern pathogenic attitudes aimed at the maintenance or alteration of body mass. The frequent charges that athletes undergo to improve their competitive performance may lead them to adopt these dietary behaviors, seeking an "ideal and compatible" body with the modality practiced. However, such behavior can lead to dehydration, hyponatremia, and reductions in anaerobic potency and oxygen consumption, considered to be detrimental effects on sports performance. Some psychological variables may be associated with DE, among them: mood state and body dissatisfaction (BD). Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the mood state and the muscularity-directed BD with the DE in male athletes. The sample of this study consisted of male and female athletes [(soccer (n = 36), basketball (n = 18) and handball (n = 16)], who trained in the state of Pernambuco. The DES, EICCE and BRUMS were used to evaluate the DE, BD and mood state, respectively. We conducted the Shapiro Wilk test to verify the normality of the data and then the Pearson correlation to relate the variables of the research. The results of the present study showed that the EICCE and BRUMS scores were not correlated with those of the DES (p> 0.05), indicating that, in male athletes, DE are not influenced by mood and BD...(AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore whether there is mood congruency effect of involuntary autobiographical memories among different mood undergraduates. Methods:Totally 60 college students were induced to generate positive, negative or neutral mood by emotional pictures and music.Vigilance task paradigm was used to induce involuntary autobiographical memory in the present experiment. All participants were asked to rate the pleasantness of involuntary autobiographical memories, then the memory proportion of different valence was calculated. Two raters who had not taken part in the experiment were instructed to divide the objective memory contents into positive, negative and neutral three types.Furthermore, the number of involuntary autobiographical memories recalled was evaluated according to the valence of objective memory contents.Besides, all participants were asked to rate the mood state at the end of the experiment. Results:There was no significant difference in pleasantness ratings among different mood college students (P > 0.05).There was a significant interaction between mood state and the valence of objective memory contents (P < 0.01).Further examination of the interaction suggested the number of positive memory contents recalled was greater in positive state compared with neutral state [(6.3 ±5.5) vs.(2.8 ±2.2),P <0.01].However,there was no difference in the number of negative memory contents and neutral memory contents among different mood states (Ps > 0.05).Additionally,no matter the pleasantness ratings was positive or negative, there was no significant correlation between the proportion of memories and mood state rated at the end of the experiment (r =0.29,-0.13,Ps > 0.05).Conclusion:It suggests that there does not exist mood congruency effect of involuntary autobiographical memories among college students in different mood states.Even in negative mood state, their involuntary autobiographical memories would still display a kind of optimistic bias.

ABSTRACT

During hypoxia conditions, psychological states can be worsened. However, little information is available regarding the effect of physical exercise performed in hypoxia conditions on mood state and anxiety symptoms. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the acute effect of moderate physical exercise performed at hypoxia on mood states and anxiety symptoms in healthy young subjects. Ten volunteers were subjected to the following conditions: a normoxic condition (NC) and a hypoxic condition (HC). They performed 45 min of physical exercise. Their anxiety symptoms and mood states were evaluated at the initial time point as well as immediately following and 30 and 60 min after the exercise session. Our results showed a significant increase in post-exercise anxiety symptoms and a significant decrease in mood scores immediately after and 30 min after exercise performed in the HC. Moderate physical activity performed at hypoxia condition increased post-exercise anxiety and worsened mood state.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the correlation between cardiorespiratory fitness and mood state in individuals with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Method Individuals with TLE (n = 20) and healthy control subjects (C, n = 20) were evaluated. Self-rating questionnaires were used to assess mood (POMS) and habitual physical activity (BAECKE). Cardiorespiratory fitness was evaluated by a maximal incremental test. Results People with TLE presented lower cardiorespiratory fitness; higher levels of mood disorders; and lower levels of vigor when compared to control health subjects. A significant negative correlation was observed between the levels of tension-anxiety and maximal aerobic power. Conclusion Low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness may modify the health status of individuals with TLE and it may be considered a risk factor for the development of mood disorders. .

ABSTRACT

Aims: Despite the recognized effectiveness of revascularization treatments in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD), a significant number of patients continue to bear a compromised health related quality of life (HRQoL). The aim of this study was to investigate the role of patients’ recovery expectations in perceived health outcomes after lower-extremity revascularization. Study Design: Single-center prospective observational study, conducted in the Division of Vascular Surgery – S. Bortolo Hospital, Vicenza - between February 2011 and June 2012. Methodology: 60 consecutive patients, 26 with critical limb ischemia (CLI) and 34 with intermittent claudication (IC), undergoing open surgery (n = 38) or endovascular interventions (n= 22) were enrolled. Measurement of HRQoL (SF-36 and VascuQoL), mood states (HADS), pain (NRS) and functional status (Pain Disability Index, PDI)were administered before treatment (T1) and at 3- month follow-up (T2). Results: ANOVA showed a significant improvement (P < .001) from T1 to T2 in almost all the domains of VascuQoL and in ‘Bodily pain’ scale of SF-36. Positive changes in T2 were also identified in 11-point NRS pain intensity (P < .01) but not in mean scores of anxiety and depression. Recovery disappointment (negative differences between perceived and expected outcomes) in ‘Occupation’ and ‘Recreation’ scales of PDI were correlated (Pearson r coefficient) with lower improvement in HRQoL indices and higher scores of anxiety and depression. Conclusion: our findings evidence the role of expectations on perceived health outcomes after treatment in patients with PAD and underline the utility to help patients to develop realistic expectations.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To investigate the stress-relief and mood-change effects of extractives from the leaves of Abies sachalinensis Methods: The essential oil was steam-distilled from the leaves of Abies sachalinensis (Todomatsu) and it was a generous gift from Japan Aroma Laboratory. Ten healthy university students (male 8, female 2) participated in the present study. After informed consent was obtained, the subject sat on a chair in a climatic chamber in which temperature and relative humidity were kept at 24°C and 50%, respectively. After ten min rest in a room, first salivary collection for cortisol, amylase and questionnaire with mood check list short form 2 (MCL-S.2) were performed. Second measurement was done after 20 min rest without aroma and then further 20 min later with aroma, third measurement was done. None felt discomfort during the experiment. Differences between the three measurements were examined using Friedman test, then if there is any significant differences, Scheffe’ test was performed. Results and Conclusion: Regarding the emotional changes, higher “relaxation” score and lower “anxiety” score were observed in the cases with aroma (third measurement) than those without aroma (second measurement, p<0.05). “Pleasantness” score did not show significant changes. No significant differences between first and second measurements.   Salivary stress parameter such as cortisol decreased significantly in the subjects with aroma (first vs. third, p=0.001). There was also significant difference between second and third measurements (p<0.05). Salivary amylase activity showed lower value with aroma than the resting value (first vs. third, p<0.05).   From these findings, essential oil from the leaves of Abies sachalinensis (Todomatsu) assumed to improve mood status and have a stress-relief activity.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To examine the effect of back massage on immune response, symptom distress, and mood state of patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allogeneic HSCT). METHODS: Subjects were thirty-seven patients undergoing sibling allogeneic HSCT (including 16 in the experimental group and 21 in the control group). Experimental subjects participated in an intervention group of back massage for 10 minutes, once a day and 5 times a week, from one week prior to the HSCT to the third week after the HSCT or a control group. A non-equivalent pretest-posttest design was used. t-test and Repeated measures ANOVA were used to examine group differences by using SAS. RESULTS: No significant group differences were found in Immune response (CD4+, CD8+,CD19+, CD56+) and symptom distress. The experimental group had significantly less mood state (anxiety, confusion) than the control group. CONCLUSION: The back massage for the patients undergoing allogeneic HSCT may be effective in altering the anxiety and confusion during hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. However, this study did not provide evidence in improving immune response and symptom distress.
